Wire Your Home with Ethernet Cable Step 5 - Completing the Installation Here in Step 5, we'll complete the installation by connecting our computers and hubs to the wall jacks, and testing the connection. With the wall jacks loosely installed, we can run a wire from the jack to our hub in the main office and from the jack to our computer in the sun room and bedroom. There are UTP cable checkers, but we think it's just as easy to plug in the computers and make sure everything works. Needless to say, make sure you are using a computer, network card and cables that you have used before. Now is NOT the time to try to determine if there is something wrong with the network card or software setup.
In fact, a great way to test the new setup is to take a computer or laptop that was connected directly to the hub and move it to the new room and wall jack. Plug it in, turn on the machine and see if you get the same network access. If you do, that's it. You're done. If not, the first place to look is the job you did with the punchdown tool. Is each wire properly seated in the connector? Did you accidentally cut through or nearly through one of the thin wires? Did you accidentally cut through a portion of the cable during the installation? After that, there's really not much else to check. But, again, don't complicate your life by using anything other than a tried and tested computer and network card. That's it. You should have a multi-room home network up and running. Have a beer!
