Software Bug ReportsHere is a list and short description of some problems, or bugs, we've found or heard of that might affect your home network:
More Windows 2000 problemsIf you've had problems mapping a network drive between a Windows 2000 computer and a Windows 98 or Windows ME machine, check out the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article. It appears that there is a bug in Windows 98/ME that can be fixed with a file available from Microsoft. This article also discusses a fix for the problem mentioned in the software bug report below (problems networking between a Windows 2000 and Windows 98 machine). Check out Knowledge Base article Q278558. 04/22/02 Windows 2000 and Windows 98If you are having trouble getting a Windows 98 machine and Windows 2000 machine to network and to share resources such as folders and files, here's one thing to check. It's been reported to us that in this circumstance -- a Windows 98 and Windows 2000 network -- that the logon name needs to be the same for both machines. That doesn't seem to make much sense to us, but that's how it has been reported. Let us know if you can confirm this issue by sending us an e-mail. 06/01/01UPDATE (as of 3/02): Several people have commented to us that the proper solution to this Win 2000 / Win 98 issue is to do the following: create an account on the Windows 2000 machine as if you were going to sign on to the machine using that account. Then use that account (the logon name and password) for the Windows 98 machine when you sign on to the network. Frankly, this does make sense to us, but the solution pointed out above was actually offered up by Microsoft tech support when a person with this problem called them. 03/01/02 Win98 and Linksys bug:If you upgrade to Windows98 and you have a Linksys Etherfast 10/100Mbps network adapter in your computer, you may get an error message and/or a lock up. You can get your computer back by booting into Safe Mode; going to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and removing the network adapter. No word on a fix. 10/11/98 Win98 and WinNT Server: I haven't been able to confirm or replicate this yet. But here's one to be aware of if you have this set up. I allowed Win98 to reset my hard drive to FAT32. After that, I was unable to get my WinNT Server to provide user accounts on the Win98 machine (necessary when setting sharing privileges). Of course, with Win98 you can't go back to regular FAT so I had to reinstall it. Once I did, I was able to get the account names without a problem. 10/19/98
