Network your home PC and Mac > Part II - Getting your Mac to "act" like a PCStep 3 - Installing the Mac software - "Dave" With TCP/IP set up on the Mac and the PC, we are ready to install our special software, Dave from Thursby Systems. To begin, simply insert Disk 1 and double click on the installer. As with most Mac installations, simply choose the "Easy Install" option and insert Disk 2 when asked for it. We received a warning that our LaserWriter driver was outdated, but the install program suggested updating and continued. After the second disk, you'll get a dialog box informing you that installation was successful and that you need to restart.
After restart, go to Apple Menu > Control Panels and select the NetBIOS Control Panel that has been installed by Dave. The first time you do this after installation, the program will ask for your license information. Type in your name, company name (if applicable) and your license number and select OK.
Next, the actual NetBIOS Control Panel will pop up. Here you simply insert the name of your Mac and the Workgroup name, making sure it is the same name you have used on the PC identification tab in the Network Control Panel. You can also type in a description for your computer but it is not necessary. In our simple setup, you do not have to worry about entering any other information in this dialog box.
Now, simply close the dialog box. You'll receive a warning that changes have been made and need to be saved. Click Save. Be forewarned, this could take some time. Restart your Mac for good measure. That's all you need to do to install Dave on the Mac. Let's move on to Step 4 where we'll complete the final steps necessary to share resources across our Mac to PC network. Go on to Step 4.
