Network your home PC and Mac > Part II - Getting your Mac to "act" like a PCStep 2 - Configuring TCP/IP on the PC With TCP/IP set up on the Mac, we need to make sure that TCP/IP is configured properly on the PC. We covered nearly all other aspects of PC Ethernet setup, including hardware, in the Ethernet How To. To begin the PC setup, click on Start > Control Panels > Network or simply right click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. If the Network configuration window does not have a TCP/IP, you'll need to add it. Click the Add button below the window, from the list of choices select Protocol and click Add. In the last window that opens, click on Microsoft and scroll down until you see the TCP/IP protocol. Click on it and select OK. If the install process can't find the files, you may be asked for the installation CD-ROM so make sure to have it close by. You may also be asked to restart, which of course, you should do as well.
Now to configure the TCP/IP, again right click on Network Neighborhood, click on the TCP/IP line and select Properties. Once this dialog box opens, click on the IP Address tab (if it isn't already on top) and click on the button "Specify an IP Address." Type in the address (in our example, 192.168.0.1) and the subnet mask (255.255.255.0). For our peer-to-peer setup, you don't need any other tabs in the setup. When you click OK on both dialog boxes, you'll be asked to restart the machine. Do so.
Once the PC restarts, the only final step is to ensure that file sharing is on and that you have selected the resources you want to share. We covered that in-depth in the Ethernet How To. So if you need instructions, go to the Step 4 in that How To. For this example, we've gone ahead and turned on File Sharing and shared the C drive. That's it for the PC setup. Let's now install Dave on the Mac in Step 3.
