Deerfield releases Wingate 5.0 Deerfield.com software has released version 5.0 of their Wingate internet proxy sharing software package. According to the company, the new Wingate provides "more than just simple Internet sharing." WinGate 5.0 proxy server now includes superior antivirus protection, a complete VPN solution, content filtering, and a built-in e-mail server. Check it out here. 12/22/02 Personal Home Networks runs holiday specials Personal Home Networks is running a number of holiday specials, including good prices on the new Microsoft home networking gear and another $1 off their network starter kit, now just $18.95. Check it out here. 11/29/02 Dantz drops price on Retrospect upgrades Dantz Development has dropped the price for upgrading to the new Dantz Retrospect 6.0 for Windows products. You can now upgrade to Retrospect Professional for under $60. Check out more details on the Dantz website. 11/29/02 Compex launches home networking kit Compex has released the SKW811, a complete wireless networking kit for individuals, according to the company, "with no previous networking experience, like students and stay-at-home moms." The SKW811 Wireless Internet-In-a-Box includes: a Compex NP16 4-port Wireless Gateway, a Compex WL11A 802.11b Wireless PC Card, a Compex WLU11A 802.11b Wireless USB Adapter, a Cat 5 cable, and a Serial Port cable. (Editor's Note: We looked at many of these components in our review of the Compex wireless gear). You can check out details of the kits, which as a suggested retail price of $199, at the Compex web site. 10/12/02 Compex opens online store Compex has launched an online store and “subscriber only” e-newsletter. To celebrate the debut of the www.cpx.com online store, Compex is offering a promotion that slashes the prices on selected products. Check it out here. 09/21/02 Personal Home Networks drops price of starter kit We thought the network starter kit over at Personal Home Networks was a good deal at $29.95, but now they've dropped the price to $19.95. For about the price of dinner out, you can have a great home network. Check it out here. 08/31/02 Linksys announces back-to-school rebate specials Linksys wants you to add network gear to your back-to-school shopping list. This week they announced a series of rebates on their network equipment, including wired and wireless gear. The "Get Wired, Go Wireless" promotion lasts until September 7. Rebates range from $5 to $15. Check out the details. 07/27/02 Compex launches Wireless Access Point with routing capability Compex has launched the NetPassage WP11A wireless access point and router with a few unique capabilities, including "Pseudo VLAN.” With this feature, you can provide shared Internet access to wireless clients but limit their access to each other. That could be an important function, for example, in public places where you want to provide Internet access but not let users see each other's files. Check it out here. 07/21/02 Cables to Go offers rebate on new USB print server If you've been looking for a way to share a USB printer across your network (without having to leave on a host computer), check out the new USB print server from Cables to Go. This device connects to your Ethernet network and has ports for two USB printers and one regular (parallel port) connection. Cables to Go currently has a $10 rebate on the piece. Check it out here. 07/01/02 Netgear unveils Platinum Family of home networking solutions Netgear has announced its Platinum Family of networking solutions that, according to the company, make it dramatically easier for anyone to set-up a home network. The equipment also comes in a "stylish" new platinum color design that looks good in any room, Netgear says. The first equipment available in the new line includes a 4-Port cable/DSL web safe router (RP614) and 5-port and 8-port Fast Ethernet switches (FS605 and FS608). Check it out here. 06/04/02 Personal Home Networks offers low-cost starter kit If you're looking for just about the cheapest way to connect two computers using "tried and true" Ethernet, check out the Direct Connect Network package from Personal Home Networks. You get two PCI network cards, a 25-foot crossover cable and a "how to" installation CD for under $29.95. Seems like a good deal to us, although we have not reviewed all of the components included. Check it out here. 05/18/02 Compex launches new web site and contest Compex, a networking equipment manufacturer, has announced the launch of their Compex giveaway sponsorship with Neoseeker.com, a popular gaming/hardware portal. The giveaway celebrates Compex's new website, www.cpx.com, which just launched this week. 05/18/02 Cables to Go launches new home wiring line Cables to Go has launched a new, complete line of home network wiring products called Premise Plus. The line includes wall jacks, patch panels, Decora wall plates, jacks, couplers and more. According to the company, Premise Plus is priced at up to 60% less than other nationally known brands, and meets or exceeds all UL and EIA/TIA standards. Check it out here. 03/29/02 Agere announces the first dual 10/100 Ethernet port wireless access point Agere Systems today announced the new ORiNOCO AP-200, the first dual 10/100 Ethernet port wireless access point optimized for use in small office environments. With a list price of only $199, the AP-200 includes unique microwave oven interference resistance technology, easy-to-use, powerful network management capabilities and strong security features. Because each AP-200 has two 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports, several AP-200s can be connected together to create a more extensive wireless network with multiple cells without requiring the use of additional Ethernet hubs. Check it out here. 03/20/02 Turtle Beach AudioTron mixes home networking and home stereo It's not exactly news, but the folks at Turtle Beach (the sound card company) recently pointed out to us their year-old AudioTron product. The AudioTron allows you to listen to your PC digital music library and Internet radio from anywhere in your home. It uses your home network to play Internet radio from a networked Internet connection and digital music files from a PC’s hard drive, so you don’t have to be in front of your PC to enjoy the benefits of digital music. Check it out here. 3/10/02 Ethernet leads home office networks Ethernet network technology is still the leading home network standard -- by a wide margin -- according to a new study from Cahners. According to the study, cited in emarketer.com, 53.6% of small office / home office (SOHO) networks use Ethernet technology. The next most popular is Fast Ethernet (28.6%), followed by wireless (3.6%) and Gigabit Ethernet (1.8%). The study did not mention phone wire or AC wire, which likely have some portion of this market. 2/28/02 Netgear announces new, faster wireless products Netgear has announced the availability of its wireless local area networking (LAN) solution based on the IEEE 802.11a standard. The new standard transfers data at five times the standard rate at about twice the price of existing 802.11b products, and enables users to network without the time and expense of laying Ethernet cable. The product family currently includes the HA501 Wireless PC Card, the HE102 Wireless Access Point, the HR314 Cable/DSL Wireless Router and the HA301 Wireless PCI Adapter.
Features include data transfer rates up to 54Mbps and
72Mbps. According to Netgear, their new products feature a
unique, simple configuration process with its Smart Wizard
technology, directing users through set up within minutes.
Future enhancements of the Smart Wizard will enable users to
easily change the wireless network setups of their laptops
for use in their offices or at home, which will be a very

1/23/02 Compex introduces a new
wireless ready broadband Internet gateway Agere Systems announces Windows certification Agere Systems has received Windows Hardware Quality Lab (WHQL) certification for the ORiNOCO™ USB (Universal Serial Bus) client, the company's wireless networking adapter that connects via the USB port. The certification means the USB device has been tested and verified to work with all versions of Microsoft Windows, including XP. More information is at www.orinocowireless.com. 1/15/02
