This is the hardware section that covers another of the emerging technologies for home networking...using the existing AC power lines in your home to connect computers throughout the house.  We'll include reviews of hardware, tips and recommendations, technology updates and more.

A new standard has been announced for AC wire networks. The HomePlug Powerline Alliance has says version 1.0 of its power-line home network specification allows PCs, consumer electronics, home control devices and other equipment to be networked via existing AC home powerlines. Throughput speed is said to be up to 14Mbps, putting this network gear in competition with wireless and phonewire equipment. Products are supposed to be on store shelves by this fall. We hope to get some soon after for reviews. For more information, go to www.homeplug.org 07/13/01

Pre-wire your new home for the future

We first heard about this from a contact who does some work with AMP, the electrical/electronic connector and related products company. Seems they have a new line of products that help you "pre-wire" a new house (while still under construction) to provide better connectivity throughout the house for phones, cable, Ethernet, etc. The idea is to use a central control system with a star pattern out to all of the rooms versus the room to room "serial links" most of us now have in our homes. We don't know a lot more about it, but it sounds like a great idea, particularly since it only adds a few thousand dollars to the price of a new home. 11/21/98

AMP calls their systems the OnQ Structured Wiring and Home Management Systems, part of the AMP Building Systems group. For more information, go to http://www.amp.com/amponq
