Adam's CornerMechwarrior 4: Vengeance Hopefully, most people will know about the Mechwarrior franchise. You know, big towering mechanized machines (mechs) destroying everything in their path. Ring any bells? The Mechwarrior brand name has had many different owners, and it has now ended up in Microsoft’s hands. Microsoft did a great job of it, and for that, I am proud of them.
In the game, you can control one of many, many, battlemechs. The game play is rich, with a variety of missions; however there are no stealth missions (how do you hide a 50-foot mech anyhow). The story in the game is OK, just not the best story you’ve ever seen, as you can foresee events. You play as Ian Dresari, a royal prince who just so happens to be an above-average Mechwarrior, whose family has been killed by the evil Steiner in order to take over the planet. As you might expect, the game entails you going around doing guerilla-style attacks against key parts of the Steiner military. That’s pretty much as far as the story goes, with a few minor plot twists. The sound is terrific, and even though it is several years old, the graphics engine is as great as today’s (imagine how great it would look back when it was just released). The music shifts according to what you are doing: when battling with other mechs the music is very fast rock, and when trekking the music is soft and sweet music. The multiplayer is great, and the computer-controlled mechs, or bots, aren’t bad compared to today’s standards, although still not as good as a human opponent. The mechlab, where you can customize mechs, is great. You can make all types of mechs, designed with missile launchers, shotguns, you name it. On the downside, the types of gameplay aren’t very diverse. Overall, a very intriguing game, with fun and value for lots of replays to boot.
