Step-by-step guide to building a $15 networkNetwork Setup - Step One So how do you set up the necessary network parameters in Windows 95/98 for DCC to work? This may seem a bit technical, but it's really not that hard. Again, some of this may have been done during the initial install of Windows on your computer, but if not, we've got you covered. We've already covered installing and running DCC starting in Step One. Now to install the network components, select Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double click on "Network." You'll see the opening network dialog box that looks like this...
In the main configuration window, you should see "Dial Up Adapter." This is the official name of the device that DCC uses to connect two computers. You'll also need one or two network protocols (or software languages) to ensure that DCC works. According to Microsoft you need IPX to make sure DCC works in a stand alone setup and also NetBEUI to allow DCC to work when the host computer is hooked up to a larger network and you want your DCC set up to have access to those network resources (for example, a printer on the network). In my experience, even if you don't care about those other network resources but the host computer IS part of a larger network, you need both protocols installed. SO..how do you install the protocol. From the box above, click on Add. Another box will pop up..click on Protocol and click Add. The "Select Network Protocol" box pops up. Select Microsoft on the left side and select IPX/SPX - compatible Protocol on the right and click on OK. Again, if your machine is on a network, you'll need to do the same process and select NetBEUI. Once these are installed, they should be automatically "bound" to the Dialup Adapter and your network configuration box should have line like the one highlighted in the graphic above. Once that is complete, you only need to make sure that file sharing is turned on that you've shared at least one file or folder. That's covered in Network Setup - Step Two.
