Step-by-step guide to building a $15 networkTo get started on this $15 network, you need to begin with two computers using Windows 95 or Windows 98. That's because this inexpensive network uses software built into those operating systems called direct cable connection. We'll call it DCC from now on. The two computers may be two desktops you have sitting close OR like me you may want to use this for an occasional hook up between the office laptop you bring home and the home PC. To be honest, this simple set up can be difficult at times. It seems like Microsoft wanted to include an easy way to network laptops to desktops, but in doing so created a software system that's a bit quirky. This has, at times, given me more trouble than hooking up a couple of network cards and running a true Ethernet, but then again no matter how you slice it you're spending more than $15. Much of the instructions contained here are also covered in the Windows help file (Select Start > Help > Troubleshooting > Direct Cable Connection.) But I'm guessing you'll find the instructions and graphics here easier to follow. So, let's go to Step One.
